Expectations
Before the experience, what did you think would happen?
I thought that I would have to do a lot of recruiting to fill up all of the available spots in my workshop, but it was actually the complete opposite. The only few posts that were made were on the Scioto Darby Elementary Facebook and Twitter pages. After a few hours my workshop was completely full. I also figured that the kids would have been interested in the activities I had chosen but they got bored with those very quickly. I had to think on the spot a couple times.
What did you expect to gain from an educational stand-point?
I expected to learn what it was like working with a large group of children. I had 14 kids at my workshop so I had my hands full for a little while. I'm glad I got to learn how to act around a group of kids and how to keep them engaged in what they are trying to learn. I have thought about going into education so learning this skill could be very helpful.
What new knowledge did you hope to gain from this experience?
I really wanted to learn about leadership and what it was like to work with a large group of people, as well as learning to be flexible and be able to adjust according to the situation. I thought about what would happen if I had to think off the top of my head during the workshop, and knew that if I had to improvise, flexibility would be necessary.
What new relationships did you gain from this experience?
I got to meet and work with the wonderful people that work at Scioto Darby Elementary. The principal of SDE, Tamar Campbell-Sauer, was extremely helpful. She let me use the gymnasium for a day and was very nice. She also posted about my workshop on some of SDE's social media to help me fill up my workshop. It was also great getting to meet the secretaries that work at SDE. Everyone was so nice and I hope to go back and visit a few times before the end of the school year.
How did you think you would benefit from your involvement?
I thought I would benefit from learning good communication skills. Working on this project consisted of many emails and different forms of communication. I know that I can take the communication skills that I learned from this and apply them to everyday life.
